Mt. Kabutogasen, 1,338 m, sits on the border of Kotoura Town (Tōhaku District) and Daisen Town (Saihaku District) in Tottori Prefecture, within Daisen-Oki National Park. It is the lead summit on the northern ridge running off the Daisen massif and was formed by andesitic lava flows of the old Daisen volcanic phase about 410,000 years ago. The narrow andesite crest — known to climbers as the 'Godzilla's Back' — is a demanding scramble locally promoted as the 'Kotoura Alps'. Early-Edo cartography labels it as 'Kabuto-yama' or 'Niko-yama'; the present name evokes its helmet-like silhouette. The standard ascent starts at Ikkōgaaru Campground, climbs past Daisen Falls and the Daikyū-tōge to Yahazu-ga-sen and on to the summit, which yields a 360° view across the Sea of Japan, Mt. Daisen and Mt. Senjō.
