Privacy Policy

Tabide is a map app for skiing, snowboarding and hiking in Japan, made by an individual developer (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what the app collects, why, where it’s kept and how you can delete it.

What we collect and why

Your account

• Your email address, and your password if you sign up with email. Firebase Authentication stores passwords in a form that can’t be turned back into the password, so we never see them.
• If you sign in with Google or Apple, the name and email address they share with us. If you use Apple’s Hide My Email, we only receive a forwarding address.
• The display name and profile photo you choose.
• Your Tabide ID, a short code the app creates for you (for example, k3x9m2p7qa) so friends can find you.

We use these to sign you in, show your profile to friends and keep your data with your account.

Your location

• While the app is open, it uses your precise location to show where you are on the map.
• While you’re recording an activity or sharing your location, the app keeps using your location in the background, so your route and shared position don’t cut out. On Android, a notification stays on screen the whole time. This stops when you finish recording and stop sharing.
• If you turn on location sharing, only the friends you choose can see where you are. Your shared position is removed from our servers as soon as you stop sharing or your phone goes offline.

The app doesn’t use your location in the background at any other time.

Recordings, plans and favorites

Activities you record (your route with its times, speeds and elevations), routes you plan and places you save are kept on your phone. When you’re signed in, a copy is also saved to your account, so nothing is lost when you change phones.

Photos and camera

• You can choose a profile photo from your photo library. It’s uploaded to your profile.
• The app can show photos you took during an activity along its route. To place each photo, it reads the time and location saved in it. These photos stay on your phone and are never uploaded.
• The camera is used only to scan a friend’s QR code. Nothing is recorded or saved.

Motion sensor

While you record, the app reads your phone’s motion sensor to tell whether you’re moving or have stopped. This happens on your phone, and nothing is sent to us.

Feedback

When you send feedback, we receive your message, the topic you picked, a screenshot if you attach one, your email address, the app’s language, your phone model, its system version and the app version. We use them to reply to you and to fix problems.

Technical log

The app keeps a short technical log on your phone to help find the cause of crashes. It isn’t sent to us.

What we don’t do

• We don’t show ads or track you for advertising.
• We don’t use analytics or crash-reporting services.
• We don’t sell, rent or trade your information.

Who can see what

• Other Tabide users can see your display name, profile photo and Tabide ID, so friends can find and recognise you.
• Friends you add can see your position only while you share it with them.
• Other users can’t see your email address, recordings, plans or favorites.

Services that handle your data

Google Firebase

Stores your account, profile, friends, recordings, plans, favorites, feedback and shared position, on servers in Japan, Singapore and the United States.

Resend

Sends account emails, such as sign-up confirmation and password reset, and the confirmation after you send feedback.

Cloudflare

Protects our map server, and forwards email sent to support@tabide.com to our mailbox.

Google and Apple

Sign you in, if you choose Continue with Google or Continue with Apple.

Our map servers (tabide.com)

Provide map images, elevation, weather and route planning. They receive the part of the map you’re viewing or the points of a route you plan, along with your IP address. Our server in Tokyo keeps access logs for 14 days.

Geospatial Information Authority of Japan

Provides aerial photos for the map. It receives the part of the map you’re viewing and your IP address.

Amazon Web Services

Stores ski resort pictures such as trail maps. It receives your IP address when the app loads them.

Wikimedia (Wikipedia and Wikidata)

When you open a mountain or another place, the app looks up its description. Wikimedia receives which place you opened and your IP address.

Links in the app to resort websites and other sites take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as you have an account. A shared position is removed as soon as sharing stops, and server access logs are deleted after 14 days.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app: Profile → ⋮ → Account Settings → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account, profile, Tabide ID, friends, recordings, plans, favorites, feedback, photos and shared position from our servers. Anything kept only on your phone is removed when you delete the app.

Feedback also arrives in our support mailbox. If you’d like those emails deleted too, write to us. If you can’t open the app, see how to delete your account.

Your choices

You can turn location, camera, photos and notifications on or off at any time in your phone’s settings, and stop sharing your location with any friend at any time. Some features need them; for example, recording needs location.

Children

Tabide isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
