船上山休憩舎

Rest house on the broad, flat summit of Mt. Senjosan (615m) in Daisen-Oki National Park, Kotoura Town, Tohaku District, Tottori Prefecture. Rebuilt as a directly commissioned Ministry of the Environment project (executed on delegation by Tottori Prefecture) and completed in May 2013, it is a two-storey timber building in mountain-hut style, with a rest area, washbasins and toilets on the ground floor and a further rest room upstairs, topped by solar panels and a wastewater treatment system. Kotoura Town's Commerce and Tourism Division manages it. Mt. Senjosan is what remains of an old Daisen lava flow after long erosion stripped away the softer rock, and its east, west and north sides are walled by Byobu-iwa, columnar-jointed cliffs over 100m high that make a natural fortress. It is also where Emperor Go-Daigo, having escaped from Oki in 1333, was received by Nawa Nagatoshi and raised his army, laying the ground for the Kenmu Restoration. The hut is 0.8km and about 40 minutes above the Higashizaka trailhead, a climb of 215m; Senjo Shrine is a further 0.6km and 20 minutes on. By car it is about 10km south of Kotoura-Senjosan IC on Prefectural Route 289; by bus, about 30 minutes from Akasaki Station on the JR San'in Main Line toward Senjosan Shonen Shizen-no-ie. Parking is available near the Higashizaka trailhead and near Senjosan Shonen Shizen-no-ie.
