Mount Shimagare
縞枯山
Chino, Nagano · Elevation 2,403 m
Mount Shimagare is a 2,403 m peak in Chino City, Nagano, set in the northern Yatsugatake range and within Yatsugatake-Chūshin-Kōgen Quasi-National Park. Its name reflects the striking "striped dieback" phenomenon, in which bands of Veitch fir and Maries' fir alternately die back and regenerate up the slope — a landscape that holds scientific as well as visual interest. Visitors can ride the Kita-Yatsugatake Ropeway to the 2,237 m summit station, then walk roughly one hour past the Tsuboniwa rock garden to the top. The route also serves as a base for the loop traverse with Kita-Yokodake and the long ridge to Mugikusa Pass.
