Mount Jōnen

Mount Jōnen is a 2,857 m peak on the boundary between Azumino and Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, the principal summit of the Jōnen range in the southern Hida Mountains. Within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park, it is listed in Fukada Kyūya's Hyakumeizan and the Hyakkōzan. Its symmetrical pyramidal silhouette dominates the Azumino basin, and the Jōnen-bō, a snow-pattern figure that emerges below the summit in early May, has long served local farmers as a sign for the rice-planting season. The two standard routes are the Ichinosawa trail, which climbs to the Jōnen-Goshi (Jōnen-Goya hut) before crossing to the summit, and the steeper Mitsumata trail through dense forest via Mae-Jōnen, both rewarding climbers with panoramic views across the Yari-Hotaka range.
