Yarisawa Lodge

A lodge at about 1,820m in the forest on the left bank of the Yarisawa valley, roughly halfway along the route from Kamikochi to the summit of Yarigatake. It was founded in 1917. The path beside the Azusa river runs among trees, with birdsong and the sound of water; from Yokoo up to the lodge it follows the clear stream, and the tip of Yarigatake can be seen from Yarimi-gawara below and Yarimi-iwa above. June brings meltwater and new green, August deep forest, and autumn the colour with Yarigatake behind it. The lodge has a bath, so you can wash off the day's sweat on the way up or back — there is no shower or tap, and soap and toothpaste may not be used, to protect the environment. The toilets are microbe-based bio-toilets. Drinking water is free from a tap in the yard, open to non-guests as well. Yarigatake Sanso is about four to five hours further on, so this is a natural place to spend the night before, and a place to leave a pack while going up and back. The campsite is at Babadaira, some thirty minutes higher, but registration is at this lodge's front desk. The season runs 27 April to 3 November.
