Minamidakegoya
南岳小屋
2,974 m · Takayama, Gifu · 2.3 km from the summit of Mt. Karasawa
A hut on the broad ridge just below Minamidake (3,033m), at about 2,970m on the Yari–Hotaka crest. From Yarigatake the 3,000m summits run on through Obamidake, Nakadake and Minamidake, and beyond them the ridge crosses the Daikiretto — one of Japan's most serious rock ridges — to the Hotaka range. The hut looks straight across at the Daikiretto: Shishibana, a minute away, is a viewpoint on the cliff edge; Jonendaira, two minutes away, is a favourite spot for sunrise; and the summit of Minamidake is five minutes off. On the way down to Yarisawa lies Tengu-ike, famous for Yarigatake reflected in its water in summer and framed by autumn colour later on. Several families of rock ptarmigan live around the hut and in summer are often seen with their chicks feeding on alpine plants. All water is collected rain, and the toilet is a sawdust bio-toilet worked by microbes. The season runs 11 July to 11 October, by reservation; in front of the hut lies a campsite of about fifty pitches.
2026: open July 11–October 11 · reservation required · sleeps 60
