横尾避難小屋

An unstaffed shelter at about 1,620m at Yokoo, roughly 11km and three hours' walk up the Azusa river from the Kamikochi bus terminal. Yokoo is the junction where the paths divide three ways — to Yarigatake, to Karasawa and the Hotaka range, and to Chogatake — and the hut stands within the Yokoo campsite on the river flat, in the area known as "in front of the winter shelter". It is a publicly owned refuge managed by the Chushin Forest Management Office of the Forestry Agency, and has long served climbers entering the mountains in winter, when Kamikochi itself is closed. Yokoo Sanso, open all year, stands next door, and in summer the walk in from Kamikochi is flat riverside path the whole way. Anyone caching food here is asked to seal it in a metal can so that small animals cannot get at it, and all rubbish must be carried out.
