Mount Goten

Mount Goten (Gotenzan, 303.2 m) is a low andesite peak in Heiwa, Nishi Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaidō. About ten million years ago an andesitic dike intruded into seafloor sediments; the harder dike resisted erosion to form the mountain, and columnar jointing is exposed on its faces. Its name was given in 1935 by the settler Inoue Yaichirō, who said he received a vision from Ōkuninushi and drew the name from Buddhist scripture; small Gotenzan shrines stand at the summit and trailhead. Formerly a quarry, leaving the stepped southern cliff, the foot of the mountain has been developed since 1996 as Gotenzan Park, the first comprehensive park in Sapporo's Nishi Ward. It is one of the Sapporo 50 Peaks.
