Mount Asama is a 2,568 m active stratovolcano with its summit in Tsumagoi Village, Gunma, near the boundary with Karuizawa, Nagano, the central peak of Jōshin'etsu-Kōgen National Park. Designated a constantly monitored volcano by the Japan Meteorological Agency, it is a compound edifice consisting of the Kamayama summit crater together with Kurofuyama, Maekakeyama, and Ko-Asamayama. Its eruptions appear in poetry as far back as the Man'yōshū. Access is gated by JMA volcanic alert levels: at level 1 hikers may climb the outer rim around Maekakeyama, while the closed radius is 2 km at level 2 and 4 km at level 3. Trails ascend from the Tengu Onsen / Asamasansō trailhead on the Komoro side and from Mine-no-chaya on the Karuizawa side, with helmets recommended for all climbers.
