Mt. Koasama

A 1,655 m parasitic volcano on the eastern flank of Mt. Asama in Karuizawa, Nagano. Its lava dome of pyroclastic scree and pumice stays largely bare of vegetation, so the summit opens an unobstructed close-up view of Mt. Asama itself and a sweeping panorama out to the Northern Alps and Mt. Shirane. A trail from Mine-no-Chaya climbs the 250 m of relief in about an hour, making this one of the easier active-volcano walks in the region; it sits within Jōshin'etsu-Kōgen National Park.
