Mt. Iō
硫黄岳
Matsumoto, Nagano · Elevation 2,554 m
Mt. Iō (Norikura, 2,554 m) is a peak of the Norikura volcanic group at the southern end of the Hida Range, straddling Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture and Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture within Chūbū-Sangaku National Park, and is counted among the 23 named peaks of Mt. Norikura. Its name refers to the sulfurous smell drifting near the summit, and the peak is also locally called Yakedake — not to be confused with the more famous Yakedake at the southern end of the Northern Alps. No maintained trail reaches the summit, and parts of the surrounding area lie within restricted-access zones.
