Ciao Ontake sits on the north face of Mt. Ontake in Takayama, Gifu, and is one of the highest ski areas in Japan, with its gondola top station at about 2,190 m. An eight-seat gondola reached every run, and the resort was known for long cruising runs with views of Mt. Norikura and the Northern Alps, and for a season that lasted past the Golden Week holidays in May. It opened in 1998 as a joint venture of JR Central and local towns, then passed to MACEARTH in 2013 and to Yufukuya in 2018. Visitor numbers fell after the 2014 eruption of Mt. Ontake, and it has not opened since the 2018-19 winter. Its national-forest land permit has lapsed and the buildings still stand.
