十石峠小屋

An unstaffed shelter standing just north of the summit of Jukkokuyama (2,520m), on the northern side of the twenty-three peaks that make up Norikuradake. The approach begins at Shirahone Onsen on the Nagano side: from the public car park you walk up to the closed entrance of Super Rindo Line C, and the trail proper starts two bends further on. It is about 3 hours 30 minutes to the hut through a zigzag climb in larch woods, then old-growth forest with huge birch and hemlock, and finally a long stretch of bamboo grass; the descent takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Public transport works too — the Kamikochi line from JR Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima, then the bus to Shirahone Onsen. The hut is maintained by volunteers living in Norikura Kogen and around Matsumoto; it is solidly built and even stocked with cooking utensils. On a clear day the Hotaka range fills the view from the summit, and in autumn the rowan turns red from about 2,200m upward.
