Mount Akaishi is a 3,121 m peak on the boundary between Ōshika Village in Nagano and Shizuoka City, the principal summit of the southern Akaishi Mountains (Southern Alps). The mountain name derives from the red radiolarian chert exposed in the Akaishi-zawa, and the peak is listed in Fukada Kyūya's Hyakumeizan and the Ittō-Sankakuten Hyakumeizan. As one of the central peaks of Minami-Alps National Park, it presents a massive form with Ko-Akaishi and Daishōji-daira to the east, ridges leading north to the Arakawa Sanzan, and the Ko-Akaishi cirque on its western flank. The summit holds the highest first-order triangulation point in Japan. The standard route enters from Hatanagi No. 1 Dam in Shizuoka, takes a Tōkai Forest shuttle to Sawarajima Lodge, and ascends the Ōkura Ridge; from the Nagano side an alternate trail follows the Koshibu River from Ōshika Village.
