Niseko Weiss is the former Weisshorn ski area on the eastern side of the Niseko range, now used by Niseko HANAZONO Resort for its Niseko Weiss Powder CATS tours. It opened in 1971 as the national Niseko Weisshorn ski area and stopped running lifts in the mid-2000s. Instead of lifts, a German-built snowcat with a 12-seat cabin ferries a maximum of 12 guests a day to untracked powder, usually for six or seven runs with up to about 450 m of descent. Slopes average around 20 degrees and top out near 30, suiting intermediate powder riders and stronger skiers, and the day includes lunch at a mountain chalet and hotel transfers. HANAZONO has floated plans to revive the area with lifts.
