Mount Iwaonupuri is a 1116 m active volcano in Kutchan, Hokkaido, and the youngest volcano in the Niseko range. Its Ainu name means “sulfur mountain.” It has a horseshoe-shaped open crater and nested craters, with slopes covered in sulfur crystals and volcanic gravel. Its sulfur mine operated from the late Edo period until 1944; during the Meiji era, Mitsui introduced Hokkaido’s first steam refining here. The mine remains received Modern Industrial Heritage recognition in 2009. The mountain is popular as an introductory climb, about an hour from Goshiki Onsen, within Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park.
