Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort sits right above Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan's most famous hot-spring towns, and has a long history: Japan's first commercial ski lift was built on its Tenguyama slope in 1948. Set on a plateau above 1,200 m, it is known for long, gentle runs such as the 3.2 km Shakunage course through larch forest and the R292 course laid on a highway closed in winter, which suit beginners and families. Tenguyama also has a steep advanced pitch, a pulse gondola with a summit restaurant, a giant swing and a zipline. Night skiing runs on Saturdays and some holidays, and a free shuttle links the slopes with the hot-spring town.
