Mt. Kurakake
鞍掛山
Takizawa, Iwate · Elevation 897 m
Mt. Kurakake (897 m) rises at the southeastern foot of Mt. Iwate in Takizawa City, Iwate Prefecture, its twin-peaked profile resembling a packsaddle laid across the larger volcano — the source of its name. Designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty as part of the "Ihatov landscape" associated with the writer Kenji Miyazawa, who climbed it many times, the peak is a popular family hike from Ainosawa Campground. Two well-graded routes (east and west) reach the summit in about an hour and twenty minutes each, and the Takizawa City mountain-opening ceremony is held here each year in late April.
