Hachimantai Resort Panorama Ski Area spreads out right in front of the Hachimantai Mountain Hotel at the northern foot of Mt. Iwate. Its slopes are wide and gentle, mainly beginner and intermediate, and the 2.7 km longest run is a favourite with families and first-timers. A beginner park with a snow escalator, a sledding and tubing playground called Winter Land, and a kids' ski programme from age 3 make it an easy choice for young families. Lift tickets also cover the neighbouring Shimokura Ski Area, linked by a free shuttle bus, where stronger riders head for powder. It is about 15 minutes by car from the Matsuo-Hachimantai exit of the Tohoku Expressway.
