APPI Kogen Ski Resort trail map
APPI Kogen Ski Resort spreads across Mt. Maemori and Mt. Nishimori in Hachimantai, Iwate, and calls itself the largest ski resort in Tohoku. Its inland site near 40 degrees north brings dry, light snow. The 21 runs total about 43 km, from a 5.5 km cruise off the summit to wide intermediate slopes, a 34-degree pitch, ungroomed powder runs, tree-run zones and a snow park. A gondola reaches the summit, and night skiing runs on weekends and busy days. Three ANA-branded IHG hotels, including the ANA InterContinental, sit at the base along with a large open-air hot spring. The season runs from early December to Golden Week in May, with shuttle buses from Morioka Station and Iwate Hanamaki Airport.

Backcountry
Skiing outside the ski area boundary is forbidden; search and rescue costs are charged (at least ¥200,000), and designated tree-run zones are skied at your own risk (2024-25 rules).
