Tayama is a city-run ski area in Hachimantai, Iwate, within walking distance of Tayama Station on the JR Hanawa Line. Two double chairs serve just three runs, yet the terrain varies, from a 37-degree pitch to a run left ungroomed to keep its deep snow. Gates can be borrowed for daily race training, and the hill has hosted national meets such as the National Sports Festival and inter-high-school and inter-college championships. With an adjoining ski jump plus cross-country and biathlon courses, it has a strong competition focus, while short lift lines suit improving beginners and intermediates.
