Hanawa Ski Area sits beside Alpas, Kazuno City's sports complex in north-east Akita, and is one of the few places in Japan that can stage alpine, ski jumping and cross-country events at the same venue. Opened in 1954, it hosted the 1997 winter National Sports Festival. Three lifts serve three runs — the advanced Giant and Panorama Paradise courses and a beginner Family course — over about 490 m of vertical. Its all-season Hanawa jumping hill is where Beijing 2022 gold medallist Ryoyu Kobayashi trained as a student. Alpas provides lodging, a restaurant and a hot spring with a view.
