Unstaffed emergency shelter at about 1,770m on the north face of Mt. Iwate, in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture. Built by Iwate Prefecture in 1989 and entrusted to Hachimantai City, it is a 36-square-metre timber structure with a stated capacity of 15. The prefecture provides it as a shelter anyone may use when the weather turns, and as a rule it holds no supplies or fittings. The site once held a settai-goya, a rest house for pilgrim climbers, put up in 1823. The hut sits just above the point where the Yakehashiri course (8.5km, 5h10m one way), which starts at the Yakehashiri lava flow, joins the Kamibo course (6.7km, 4h one way) from near Kamibo Shrine; the summit is a further 40 minutes up. By car from Nishine IC the Yakehashiri trailhead is about 15 minutes and the Kamibo trailhead about 30. There is no water source, but the hut offers a toilet stop, and Mt. Iwate rises directly in front of it. Mt. Iwate is an active volcano and access restrictions may apply, so climbers should check the current regulations before setting out.
