Nikkō-shi, Tochigi · Elevation 2,486 m
Mount Nantai is a 2,486 m stratovolcano on the north shore of Lake Chūzenji, often called "Nikkō Fuji" for its symmetrical cone. The centerpiece of Nikkō National Park, it has been an object of mountain worship since the priest Shōdō first opened it in the late Nara period, and the inner shrine of Nikkō Futarasan Jinja stands on the summit. The official pilgrimage trail begins at the Tōhaimon gate of Chūgūshi shrine on the lake. The mountain is open for climbing from April 25 through November 11, with registration from 6:00 to 12:00 noon and an entry offering of 1,000 yen. The annual Tōhai-sai festival from July 31 has been held for over 1,200 years and permits nighttime ascent.
