Mount Nyohō

女峰山

Mount Nyohō is a 2,483 m stratovolcano in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and one of the three sacred peaks of Nikko (Nikkō Sanzan) together with Mount Nantai and Mount Tarō. Set within Nikkō National Park, it forms the eastern part of the Nikkō volcanic group with neighbouring Akanagi-san. The volcano erupted repeatedly from roughly 350,000 years ago until ceasing about 86,000 years ago, and prolonged erosion has carved one of the sharpest profiles in the range. The summit shrine, Nyohō-san Jinja, enshrines Tagorihime-no-Mikoto and the peak has long been an object of mountain worship. Listed in the Nihon Nihyaku Meizan and the Kantō Hyakumeizan, the mountain is typically climbed via the long ridge from Kirifuri Highland over Akanagi-san, from Gyōja-dō in central Nikko via Kuroiwa and the Karasawa hut, or via Mount Taishaku from Fujimi Pass — all demanding day trips suited to fit hikers.
