Mt. Nakakurayama

Nakakura-yama is a 1,530 m mountain in the Ashio district of Nikkō City, Tochigi Prefecture, in the Ashio Mountains. Smelting fumes from the historic Ashio Copper Mine once stripped the ridgeline of vegetation, leaving a barren landscape sometimes likened to a "Grand Canyon of Japan." A lone beech standing west of the summit, the "solitary beech," has become the mountain's symbol, and reforestation and erosion-control work continues today. It appears in the guides "Mountains of Tochigi Prefecture" and "Walking the Kantō-area Ranges."
