Mount Asahi, the principal peak of the Daisetsuzan range, is an active volcano rising to 2290.9 m, the highest point in Hokkaido and a centerpiece of Daisetsuzan National Park. The area is known in Ainu as Kamui Mintara, the playground of the gods, and is famous for alpine flower communities in summer and Japan’s earliest autumn foliage. From Asahidake Onsen in Higashikawa, the ropeway reaches Sugatami Station at 1600 m; the rocky climb to the summit takes about two and a half hours. Active fumaroles continue to emit steam in Jigokudani on the western slope below the summit.
