Kurodake Ski Area is a true mountain ski area on the north-east face of Mount Kurodake (1,984 m), high above Sounkyo Onsen in Daisetsuzan National Park. A ropeway climbs to the 5th station, and a pair lift continues to the 7th, where the high altitude keeps the snow light and powdery and the Daisetsuzan peaks fill the view. From the top the run splits into three lines, under the lift, through the trees and along a cornice, mostly at moderate angles. The season runs from early December to Golden Week, and the hot-spring village at the base makes it an easy overnight trip.

Skiers going beyond the managed area must fill in the entry register and mountain entry consent form at the 5th-station building (or hand it in at the ropeway ticket office) and file a climbing plan with the police.
