Kitadaisetsu Ski Area lies on the north-east face of Mount Tengu in Shirataki, Engaru, central Hokkaido. It opened in 1979 with runs of up to 4,000 m and pitches of 33 degrees, and in 1992 it hosted the downhill and super-G of the All Japan Alpine Championships. Lift operation stopped in 1999, resumed in 2007 and has been suspended again since the 2009-10 season. In winter the mountain is now closed to the public and used for guided snowcat skiing, where small groups ride a cat up to open bowls and tree runs in deep powder.
