Kandatsu Snow Resort in Yuzawa is prized for how easy it is to reach: about 1 km from the Yuzawa exit of the Kan-etsu Expressway and seven minutes by free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa Station. It runs on natural snow only, and its northeast-facing slopes from the 1,000 m summit hold 16 courses, from long gentle cruisers beginners can ride top to bottom to the 45-degree Orion, the Heracles mogul run, an ungroomed powder slope and a tree run. Parks produced by pro snowboarder Atsushi Ishikawa add variety. On Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays the lifts run late into the night, and the base lodge has a large bath and sauna. The season runs from mid-December to early April.
