Yuzawa Kogen is the ski area you can walk to from Echigo-Yuzawa Station: about ten minutes through the onsen town brings you to a ropeway whose 166-person cabin lifts you to a plateau at roughly 1,000 metres. Up top are gentle cruisers and a couple of steeper runs that hold powder, with views over the Uonuma mountains, and you can link runs all the way down to the base for a descent of about 5 km. At the bottom, a snow play park with sledding and tubing and an easy family slope suit first-timers and children. A shared pass links it with GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama, and the Shinkansen makes it an easy day trip from Tokyo.
