Mount Iiji

Mount Iiji is a 1,111.2 m peak straddling Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City in Niigata, with a tidy conical silhouette that locals affectionately call Ueda-Fuji or Echigo-Fuji. The name combines the kanji 飯 (food, for the grain deity enshrined at the summit) and 士 (resonating with Fuji). Trails climb through the Iwappara Ski Area on the south face and another ski area on the north; from the Iwappara trailhead the summit takes about two and a half hours. The top offers a full 360-degree view of the Tanigawa range, the Echigo Sanzan (Hakkai, Naka-no-dake, Komagatake), and Mount Makihata. A climbing festival is held each year on 11 November in honour of the 1,111 m elevation. The peak features in Niigata 100 Meizan.
