Iwappara is one of Yuzawa's oldest ski areas, spread across the southern face of Mt. Iiji with skiing dating back to the 1930s. It is best known for wide, gentle terrain: the 200 m-wide Main Bahn and the open mid-mountain slopes make it a favourite with beginners and families, while ungroomed runs near the top reach 35 degrees and hold powder after snowfall. There are 20 runs, views of the Tanigawa range, night skiing every evening, a 634 m sled run, a fenced kids' snow park and a day-use onsen. A free shuttle runs from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, about 15 minutes away, and Yuzawa IC is only about 3 km off.

Getting to Iwappara Ski Resort and parking

Car: Kan-etsu Expressway, Yuzawa IC (関越道湯沢IC), 3 km
Parking: All lots free on weekdays (including large vehicles). On weekends, holidays and New Year (12/29–1/3), P1 and P2 (large vehicles only, "Iwappa", advance reservation only) are paid

Train

Shinkansen Echigo-Yuzawa Station Joetsu Shinkansen · Shuttle times: 2026-27 season timetable → Free shuttle bus from the East Exit (no reservation; scheduled runs on weekends, holidays and weekdays), about 15 min to the Iwappara base resort center. Also a reservation-only loop bus (Echigo-Yuzawa course, about 22 min per loop)
