Ishiuchi Maruyama is a big ski area in Minamiuonuma, Niigata, five minutes from the Shiozawa-Ishiuchi exit of the Kan-etsu Expressway and ten minutes by free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, so Tokyo skiers can come and go by bullet train in a day. The Sunrise Express gondola-chair combo climbs to The Veranda terrace with views over the Uonuma basin, and three bases (Central, North and Hatsukaishi) open onto 27 runs, from gentle tree-lined trails to ungroomed steeps, tree-run zones and the giant Monster Pipe halfpipe. Night skiing is extensive in midwinter, and a shared ticket links it with GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen.

Car: Kan-etsu Expressway, Shiozawa-Ishiuchi IC (関越道塩沢石打IC), 5 min
