Hachi Highlands spreads over the Yabu side of Mt. Hachibuse (1,221 m) in northern Hyogo and is one of the biggest ski areas in the Kansai region. It shares lift tickets with Hachi Kita on the far side of the summit, and when snow allows you can ski over the top between them, giving 25 runs and slopes in all. Highlights are the wide Central slope, a long, gentle tree-lined run to the base, the steep Takamaru area that opens only in deep snow, and THE PARKS, a large terrain park run with HYWOD. A kids' park and a snow-play area with sleds and tubes make it popular with families. It is about 30 minutes from Yoka-Hyonosen IC, and the season runs from late December to late March.

Getting to Hachi Highlands Ski Resort and parking

Car: Yoka-Hyonosen IC, Kita-Kinki-Toyooka Expressway, 30 min
Parking: Slope car park: cars 1,800 yen all day (open 24 hours); more car parks in the Tando and Okubo districts at the foot (about 4,600 spaces in total for Hachi and Hachi-Kita)

Train

Osaka Station → Yoka Station JR limited express (via Fukuchiyama Line and San'in Main Line) · About 2 h 20 min · From Sannomiya about 2 h by JR limited express via Himeji; from Kyoto about 2 h via Fukuchiyama → Zentan Bus Hachibuse Line (for Hachibuse) about 55 min, 930 yen to Tando/Nashigahara, 960 yen to Tando-chuo/Narao/Hachibuse (some runs do not operate on weekends and holidays). Free pickup minibus (call on arrival; last Sat of Dec – first Sun of Mar) from Tando lodging area and other points to the Rinkan Pair Lift. Taxi about 45 min, about 9,900 yen
