Wakasa Hyonosen sits on the western foot of Mt. Hyonosen in Wakasa, Tottori, a peak shared with Hyogo and Okayama. Frost-coated trees near the top, rare in western Japan, have earned it the nickname 'Zao of the West'. From the 1,200 m summit, five runs follow the natural terrain, from the gentle Romance course to the 39-degree Challenge course, with powder and wide mountain views. Lodges and guesthouses cluster around the slopes, and day trips from the Kansai and Sanyo regions are practical. Buses run about an hour from Tottori Station, and winter highway buses come from Osaka.
