Gionyama Ski Area is a small community hill at the entrance to the Yakusokusawa hamlet in the Kamisendo district of Ugo, Akita. Built in 1976, it is kept running by a committee of local residents, who mow the slope in summer and run the lifts in winter, and skiing is free. Two lifts in a row reach the top, and local children use it for ski practice. Each March it hosts the Sendo snow festival, with ski races, a snow rice-planting ritual and a performance of the local Sendo Bangaku dance.
