Akiyama Ski Area is a small town-run hill in Mamurogawa, Yamagata, beside Route 344 about 1.5 km from Mamurogawa Station. Its roughly five-hectare slope has a rope lift and floodlights, suits beginners and slalom practice, and on clear days looks out to Mount Chokai and Mount Gassan. Prices are very low, local children and over-65s ski free, and night skiing runs on weekday evenings too, so it is very much a neighbourhood hill. The adjoining Akiyama cross-country course is certified by the Ski Association of Japan and has hosted the National Sports Festival and national championships.
