Hagurosan Ski Area is a small hill near the summit of Mount Haguro, one of the three sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains, run by the Kyukamura Shonai-Haguro resort hotel. Two lifts serve seven runs with names drawn from the mountain's yamabushi heritage, such as Tengu and Yamabushi, plus a kids' slope and a sledding area, making it an easygoing choice for families and beginners. Rental and an SAJ-certified ski school are on hand, and the hotel's own hot spring, Hazuki no Yu, is right there for a soak or an overnight stay. The season runs from late December to early March, about 50 minutes by bus from Tsuruoka Station.

- Tokyo Station → Tsuruoka Station JR Joetsu Shinkansen (change at Niigata) and JR Uetsu Main Line · Joetsu Shinkansen about 90 min + Uetsu Main Line about 110 min · Also via the Yamagata Shinkansen to Shinjo (about 230 min), Rikuu West Line to Amarume (about 50 min) and Uetsu Main Line to Tsuruoka (about 15 min) → From stop 2, Shonai Kotsu bus for Haguro-sancho about 50 min to "Kyukamura Shonai Haguro-mae", then 1 min on foot. Or the Kyukamura free shuttle (dep. Tsuruoka Station 10:30 and 14:45, about 30 min; book by 20:00 the day before)
