Gassan Ski Area trail map

Gassan Ski Area spreads over Mount Ubagatake, a sub-peak of Mount Gassan in Nishikawa, Yamagata, and is unusual in skiing from spring into early summer. Snow is so deep in winter that the road is closed, so the area opens in early April as other resorts finish and usually runs until about July on deep spring snow. Its treeless Large Slope turns into moguls as the season goes on, while the groomed Valley Course suits a wide range of skiers. A pair lift and a T-bar serve the slopes, and many visitors hike to the summit or head into the unmanaged backcountry. Shizu Onsen lies just below, about 20 minutes by car from the Gassan interchange.

Parking: 300 spaces · Parking contribution ¥1,000 per car per day (Ubasawa about 300 spaces; when full, Shizu temporary parking about 100 spaces)

Backcountry

Everything outside the area west of the lift (including Mt. Ubagatake) is unmanaged; backcountry users must file a climbing plan at the base station and act at their own risk, and rescue outside the managed area is charged.
