Mt. Yudonosan
湯殿山
Nishikawa, Yamagata · Elevation 1,500 m
Yudonosan (1,500 m) stands on the boundary between Tsuruoka City and Nishikawa Town in Yamagata Prefecture, and together with Gassan and Haguro-san makes up the Dewa Sanzan, the three sacred mountains of northern Honshū. The mountain's Hongū shrine, set in a ravine on the flank, has no main hall — pilgrims remove their shoes and approach the natural sacred object directly under the centuries-old injunction "speak not of it, hear not of it." The peak lies within Bandai-Asahi National Park and is selected for both the Yamagata 100 Mountains and Mountains of Japan 1000.
