Mt. Okabu (997 m) is the northern of the twin Kabu peaks in Kabusan Prefectural Natural Park, Mamurogawa Town, Mogami District, Yamagata Prefecture. Together with sister peak Mt. Mekabu to the south it forms the double-summit Kabu massif, and is counted among the Yamagata 100 Famous Mountains and Japan's 1000 Mountains. Despite an elevation just shy of a thousand meters, the steep rocky ridges, old-growth giants and raptor nesting sites give the mountain a wilder character than its height suggests. From a small forest-road trailhead, hikers ford a stream, reach a viewpoint outcrop on the northern ridge, and then bushwhack to the main summit, with a guide recommended for the final scramble.
