Gorinzaka is a small town-run ski hill in Ugo, southern Akita, said to be the lowest-elevation ski area in Japan with a lift: the top is only about 100 m above sea level. A single gentle slope is used by beginners, snowboard learners and children with sleds. The town opened it in 1969 as a winter fitness ground for residents, and lift tickets are very cheap. It runs from early January to early March, closed on Mondays, with floodlit night sessions a few evenings a week.
