Furano Ski Resort sits in the middle of Hokkaido above the Furano basin, whose cold inland air keeps the snow dry and light. Long known as a World Cup venue, it splits into two zones: the Furano Zone, reached by a 101-person ropeway, and the Kitanomine Zone with its gondola. Its 28 runs range from wide cruisers up to about 4 km long to ungroomed steeps and mogul pitches, with views of the Tokachi and Daisetsuzan ranges. Children of primary-school age and under ride free, there is night skiing in midwinter, and the slopeside New Furano Prince Hotel has natural hot springs. The season runs from late November to early May, with direct buses from Asahikawa Airport.
