Nakafurano Hokusei Ski Area uses the slopes of Mount Hokusei, the hill right behind the centre of Nakafurano that is famous in summer as the Hokuseiyama lavender garden. A single-seat chairlift climbs to the top, with views over the Tokachi range and farmland, and part of the slope is left ungroomed so that the morning after a snowfall feels like a little backcountry run. The season is short, usually from about the second week of January to early March. In recent winters a lack of snow and concern for the lavender under it kept the lift closed, and only a snow play area for children opened.
