Kokusetsu Ashibetsu is the city-owned ski hill on the edge of Ashibetsu in central Hokkaido. Opened in 1965, it has three lifts and four runs from beginner slopes up to 30 degrees, and at its peak in fiscal 1985 it drew about 446,000 visits a year. Falling population and fewer skiers cut that sharply, and operation was suspended in fiscal 2020. A Sapporo company ran it for one season in 2021-22 before pulling out, and it has been closed again since fiscal 2022. Reopening is estimated to need several hundred million yen, mainly for new power equipment, and the city currently forbids entry to the slopes.
