Mt. Arao

Mt. Arao is a 984 m peak in the Onikōbe area of Naruko-onsen, Ōsaki City, Miyagi Prefecture — the central cone of the Onikōbe Caldera. Although its summit is cloaked in primeval beech forest with limited views, the volcanic terrain at its foot features hot-spring resorts, the Onikōbe geyser, and the Katayama Jigoku fumarole field. The trailhead lies about 16 km northwest of Naruko-onsen on Route 108, and a switchback trail reaches the summit in roughly two hours. Autumn foliage is renowned, and the peak is included in the Miyagi Prefecture Mountain Guide and the Michinoku 120 lists.
