Mount Nakano
中ノ岳
Uonuma, Niigata / Minamiuonuma, Niigata · Elevation 2,085 m
Mount Nakano is the 2,085 m central summit of the Echigo Sanzan range, straddling Minamiuonuma and Uonuma cities in Niigata Prefecture and forming the heart of Echigo-Sanzan-Tadami Quasi-National Park. Its broad, half-moon-shaped crest has earned it the local nickname "O-Tsuki-yama" (Moon Mountain), and it is the highest of the three Echigo peaks. Listed in the Nihon Nihyaku Meizan, the Niigata 100 Meizan, and the Echigo 100 Meizan, it sits at the convergence of traverses from Hakkaisan, Echigo-Komagatake, and Usagidake, and its sole standalone ascent climbs from Jūjikyō Gorge on the Saguri River — a strenuous round-trip on the order of twelve hours. A steel-framed emergency shelter stands on the summit; the trail is rated for advanced hikers due to landslip sections and a long carry between water sources, and the official opening is generally from late June to late July.
