Hakkaisanroku is a small city-owned ski area at the foot of Mt. Hakkai in Minamiuonuma, with two pair lifts serving five runs and views over the Echigo Sanzan peaks and the Uonuma basin. The wide, gentle 1st course suits beginners, while the race-used 2nd course and an ungroomed mogul pitch draw racers, and its junior races have produced Olympic skiers. Every run returns to the same base, so families can keep track of children, and there is a dedicated sledding slope. It is about five minutes from the Yamato Smart IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway, with a season from late December to mid-March.
